Open the Book

Enabling every child to hear the story of the

Bible at school in their primary years.

Open the Book offers primary school children an opportunity to hear major stories from the Bible. These are presented in schools by a team of Christians from local churches. Each presentation takes about ten minutes and can stand alone or be part of a wider school assembly.

Within Horsford Benefice we have two teams, one for our fortnightly visit to Hevingham Primary School and the other to our weekly visit to both sites of Horsford Church of England Primary School.

Led by Revd. Garry Goodman, a regular team presents the stories using a variety of methods. The children are involved in acting out the stories with the team members. After the story, usually a song is sung and there is a short closing prayer. If they choose, the children can make the prayer their own by saying “Amen”.

Open the Book fulfils both OFSTED and Church School Inspection (SIAMs) requirements for collective worship, and has been successfully used in a multi-faith context.  All Open the Book volunteers are registered and have been DBS checked.

We believe this to be an important and enjoyable learning experience for the children.

If you would like to become involved in any way, either acting out the stories, making costumes or narrating please contact us.
